Every struggle that people face can be found out and must be treated accordingly. The Counsellor tries to figure out the best approach that will work for each and every client. Some clients do really well with cognitive therapy and make big changes in their life. At the same time some clients need existential therapy or relaxation therapy. Each client is different and responds to different counselling techniques in different ways. The following are some of the specialized therapies Ancy Joe uses in the counselling process.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
The focus is on working with client’s thinking and acting rather than primarily with expressing feelings. It is an educational process. The counsellor gives homework assignments and uses teaching strategies for straight thinking and the client learns to practice those skills in everyday life. This therapy has been applied to treatment of depression, anxiety, relationship issues, stress management, panic attacks, social phobias, performance anxiety, substance abuse, etc. This therapy is useful to modifying client’s cognitions.
This therapy focuses on directly observable behaviour, current causes of behaviour, learning experiences that promote change, training, assessment and evaluation. It emphasis on specific factors that influence present functioning and what can be used to modify performance. This is applied in individual, family and group counselling. Therapy is applied in stress management, children’s behavioural problems, trauma, depression, etc.
Client -Centered Therapy
This therapy is emphasised on how clients can act in the world with others, how they can move forward in constructive way and how they can successfully deal with obstacles that are blocking their growth. It promotes self-awareness and self- reflection. And it applied for family and couple issues, trauma, for parent-child relationship, multicultural counselling, for community programs, administration, management.
This approach helps the client to explore morality, meaning, freedom, responsibility, anxiety and aloneness related to personal struggles. They are invited to reflect on life, to recognize their range of alternatives and to decide. This therapy is useful for clients who are facing developmental crisis or transition in life and those who are living concerns. This therapy helps them to make choices, dealing with freedom and responsibility, coping with guilt and anxiety, making sense of life, finding values.
Solution Focused Therapy
Counsellor helps the client to be future focused, goal oriented through this therapy. It emphasizes strengths of the clients and to create solutions that will lead to a richer future and assist clients in viewing their lives in positive ways, rather than being problem saturated. This is applied in people with adjustment disorders, anxiety, and depression and can be applied in family and adolescents.
It explains why and how one functions. And it helps individuals take more effective control of their lives, teaching them to make more effective choices as they deal with the people they need in their lives. Clients decide to change their present behaviour and develop a specific plan for a change. This can be applied in individual and group counselling.
Relaxation therapy will help the clients to release stress, control anxiety symptoms, improve sleep, and have a better quality of life in general. It helps the client to quiet the mind; to allow thoughts to flow in a smooth level rhythm, and induce the relaxation response. Relaxation therapy does not attempt to empty the mind, since it is not possible to think of nothing. By using relaxation techniques, it is possible to improve health, strengthen the immune system, build up resistance to stress, cope with change, and improve quality of life.
Family Systems Therapy
This therapy explore the system for family process and rules by using family genogram and it focuses on the family relationships within which the continuation of individual’s struggles. It is useful for dealing with marital distress, problems of communicating among family members, power struggles, crisis situations in the family, helping overall functioning of the family.
